New simulator has RPG elements for western market! For example, player can choose to attack bomber first or fighter first. American gamers do not want real airwar simulator, want to be action hero. Finally, you return to base where you end up in a collision with a random Spitfire who decides to land on top of you. They keep chasing you as you fly in a circle until they all run out of gas and crash. They shoot at you but you just execute a lazy turn and they all miss. Did I mention the rest of your flight got shot down by the gunners on the bombers? Oh look, the fighter escort! Now you have 8 (the sim can’t support more than that) 109’s on your tail as you fly across England. Make a couple passes at the bombers and note that the ones you hit are belching fire and smoke but keep on towards the target. Take off in your Hurricane and climb to intercept enemy bombers. I really hope I’m wrong, but my fear is that a typical IL-2:CoD mission will be like this: People want their late west front 109K to match every single published speed for a clean test model but god forbid if there is any variation in the engine performance or they can’t fly it like a robot. Over on SimHQ there was a ton of gnashing and wailing when it was announced that the new IL-2:CoD will model pilot fatigue. The rivet counters have an odd disconnect, which we have discussed here before, between accurately modeling the mechanics of an airplane and accurately modeling the experience of flying and fighting an airplane. Oleg himself has said that the vast majority of IL-2 owners fly exclusively single player so it’s quite sad that they don’t seem to put any real effort into making it better. Even if I had the time or desire to play co-op multiplayer, the AI would still be terrible on the other side. This is really my biggest problem with IL-2 (and most sims out today). I’m guessing the IL-2 forum whiners all just play multiplayer, since there’s been no bitching about the way the AI flies the planes that they nitpicked into perfection. Gotta hope the AI’s seen some serious improvement here. turning fights.) The single-player version of Air Warrior, which was ugly as sin and running on an ancient engine, did this wonderfully. There were sims out 3 or 4 years before the original IL-2 where pilots would execute realistic maneuvers, break off attacks when damaged, and fly maneuvers that took advantage of the strengths of their planes. Il-2:1946 is fine multiplayer, but the AI is ridiculously simplistic, unrealistic, and suicidal. Frankly, I’m far more concerned about the AI and tactics than I am about the missions and campaign.
